About San Francisco Ballet

San Francisco Ballet (SFB) is one of the most celebrated and visionary classical ballet companies in the world. Established in 1933 by Willam Christensen and the San Francisco Ballet Foundation, whose co-founders included the teacher Alma F Pozo and the impresario Louis Henaff, it is the oldest professional ballet company in the United States and has been credited with helping to shape modern American ballet. The company is housed at the War Memorial Opera House, in San Francisco, California, where it performs its annual season.

History and Founders

San Francisco Ballet, founded in 1933 by former Diaghilev dancer Adolph Bolm, became a professional troupe in 1936 under the direction of the prima ballerina/impresario Fanna Smyth Tosquelles and her three brothers – Willam Christensen, Harold Christensen and Lew Christensen. All former dancers with the Ballets Russes, the brothers served as the company’s artistic founding fathers. Willam Christensen went on to choreograph the first US full-length productions of Swan Lake (1940) and The Nutcracker (1944); his production of the Tchaikovsky ballet premiered in San Francisco in 1944 and has since become an annual holiday tradition.

With the arrival of Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson in 1985, SF Ballet became known in the dance world for both preserving classical ballet and creating innovative new work.

Artistic Vision and Repertoire

The San Francisco Ballet’s repertoire includes works by the great master, such as Coppélia, Giselle, and Romeo and Juliet. The repertoire includes many modern and contemporary pieces and some bold new productions created for the company. San Francisco Ballet is known for its classical ballets; Coppélia, Giselle, and Romeo and Juliet showcase technical mastery and passion.

Alongside this classical repertoire, San Francisco Ballet has also long embraced contemporary ballet and commissioned a great deal of new work from some of the finest choreographers working today – George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, William Forsythe, Christopher Wheeldon and many, many more. The dual commitments to the classical canon and high-minded modern experiment underscore San Francisco Ballet’s desire to remain a working, evolving company at the forefront of the evolving craft of ballet.

Performances and Venues

Every year, the San Francisco Ballet performs its main stage productions at the War Memorial Opera House, located in San Francisco, California in the US. This house was built in the late 30s and remains one of the most beautiful music houses in the city. It has amazing classical architecture on the outside, and modern facilities on the inside. The structure of the building contributes to the performance by enhancing the audience’s experience, which enables each of them to enjoy the show regardless of their taste.

One of the seasonal highlights of San Francisco Ballet is its production of The Nutcracker every December: the great Christmas tradition that plays to all ages. This beautiful ballet with its magical choreography and lavish sets is a holiday delight and a showcase for the company dancers.

Community Engagement and Education

The San Francisco Ballet has a deep commitment to community engagement and dance education. Its outreach programs promote access to ballet for diverse audiences and help foster young people’s appreciation of dance. These efforts are carried out in school programs and through workshops and free performances.

Training for young dancers aspiring to professional careers starts at the San Francisco Ballet School with Pre-Ballet classes for six and seven-year-old students and progresses through upper school divisions to pre-professional. Classical ballet technique, artistry, and personal development are essential in the program, preparing the young students for professional careers in dance. Some have become members of San Francisco Ballet and others join internationally acclaimed ballet companies worldwide.

Notable Achievements and Recognition

San Francisco Ballet has been recognized by critics and awards for its artistic success. The company is widely known for its mastery of both technical skills and acting motivation, as well as its innovation in choreography. San Francisco Ballet is one of the nation’s and the world’s pre-eminent dance companies from its tours and guest performances.
