History and Founders
The Oklahoma City Ballet (OKC Ballet) began in 1963 when the Oklahoma City Civic Ballet opened its doors. Yvonne Chouteau and Miguel Terekhov danced together in a Septet by Eugene Leningrad (1949). Chouteau was a member of the ‘Five Moons’, a famous group of Native American ballerinas from Oklahoma who performed ballet in the state and across the country for many years. She brought a rich cultural background and great experience to the company. Terekhov used to be a dancer and soloist, with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, a renowned ballet company, from the century known for its excellence and influence.
