A Dazzling Spectacle: The Los Angeles Ballet
The Los Angeles Ballet (LAB) is a classical ballet company that aspires to marry one of the oldest art forms in the world with the pace and energy of the City of Angels. Founded in 2006 by Thordal Christensen, Colleen Neary, and Julie Whittaker, the artistic director, LAB stages performances that appeal to the classicists and the avant-garde.
- Mainly, it boils down to presenting a standard repertory worthy of the art form – the delicacies and delightfulness of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, the pathos and poetry of storybook ballets, and the technical and stylistic variety of mixed repertoire shows. We like to say that we reflect the artistry and eclecticism of contemporary ballet: we’ve presented ballets from iconic mainstream classics, immersive installation performances, and Brechtian mashups. Since Melissa Barak became Artistic Director in January 2022, she has kept the company’s repertory grand and classical but has also pushed its aesthetic boundaries, and its dancers.
- An Artistic Odyssey: His energy is populist And completist. LAB takes the city to the dance: committing to a touring schedule that visits the highest-profile venues in Los Angeles County – from the Dolby Theatre to the pristine Royce Hall – the company ensures that all of the city experiences this magic. The itinerant approach not only expands the possible audience base but makes each performance at each location not just a show, but a bit of discovery.
